Fall 2020: Presentations and Publications

Shawana P. Johnson, DM Class of 1998, presented “Sustainability and Managing Global Supply Chains,” at the CWRU Entrepreneurship Speaker Series on November 10, 2020. 


Michael Grieves, DM Class of 2000, talked with with Cognite's Tatiana Moguchaya at #IgniteTalks 2020 to discuss the future of digital twin technology.


J. Bart Morrison, DM Class of 2002, collaborated with his colleague, Francis M. Lazarus, to write a national report called, “Managing Governance Change in PreK-12 Catholic Schools.” It was published in June 2020 by FADICA, a leading philanthropic peer network serving as a catalyst for a vital Catholic Church, Catholic Ministries, and the Common Good.  


Joseph Mandato, DM Class of 2004, published a book with Hambleton Lord and Christopher Mirabile entitled, The Entrepreneur’s Journey. The book is available here.


Joe also published an article with Willam Devine in the Harvard Business Review called “Why the CEO Shouldn’t also be the Board Chair?


Maurice Apprey, DM Class of 2006, published an article called, “Chiasmatic Crossings Between Freud’s Clinical Projects and Social Concerns.” Society 57, 276–280 (2020). 


Jim Hayes, DM Class of 2009, published a chapter on cyber security and corporate fraud in Corporate Fraud Exposed: A Comprehensive and Holistic Approach by H Kent Baker and edited by Lynette Purda and Samir Saadi.

Ann Kowal Smith, DM Class of 2010, published an article called, The seminar goes to work: Towards a theory of collaborative literacy was published in Industry in Higher Education, March 2020.


Ann also presented at the Society for Human Resource Managements’ Inclusion 2020 Conference on October 21st with Dr. Susan Sweeney, CHRO of EnPro Industries. Their presentation was entitled, “Inclusive Global Teams: Bridging Distance and Disconnection.”

Mimi Lord, PhD Class of 2012, was invited to submit an article for a special issue on Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT), which was published in September in the  Journal of Risk and Financial Management.  Mimi had developed a scale for measuring investment committees’ use of MPT during her doctorate work, and the recently published article, “University Endowment Committees, Modern Portfolio Theory, and Performance,” was one of the chapters in her dissertation.  Mimi believes that her later articles used more sophisticated quantitative analysis, but she has a soft spot for this earlier paper since it prompted a 2010 trip to San Diego to meet with Harry Markowitz, winner of the Nobel Prize for developing the theory. Stephan Liozu, PhD class of 2013, commented on COVID-19 related challenges businesses are facing regarding pricing in Industry Week.


Donna Haeger, PhD Class of 2014, was interviewed for an article in the Cornell Chronicle.  


Robert Gemmel, PhD Class of 2013, published an article with G. West Page called,“Learning Behaviors Across Levels in New Ventures and Innovation Outcomes”, in the Journal of Small Business Management. 


Bob’s article, written with Dick Boland and Dave Kolb in 2012, entitled “The Socio-Cognitive Dynamics of Entrepreneurial Ideation,” was based on his first qualitative study. According to Google Scholar the citations are up to 156. It was published in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. 36 (5): 1053-1073.

 

Mariana Amatullo, PhD Class of 2015, participated in Chilean Design Month at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture. Marianna is the Vice Provost for Global Strategic initiatives at The New School and Associate Professor of Strategic Design and Management at Parsons She participated on a panel with Alfonso Gómez, Founding Member of Corporación 3xI, Director of the UC Innovation Center on November 5, 2020. They shared their perspectives on the various dimensions and challenges of design practice and culture today, moderated by Nicolás Rebolledo, Tutor in Service Design at the Royal College of Art and co-founder of UNIT, a strategic design and services studio co-organiser of Design Month 2020. 


Candace Steele Flippin, DM Class of 2016, was a Keynote Speaker for the Public Relations Student Society of America  (PRSSA) Conference on October 27, 2020.


Candace ran a webinar on October 20, 2020 for the American Bankers Association called Bridging Multigenerational Workplace Dynamics. Building off her latest research on managing and communicating effectively across diverse groups, she shared practical insights to improve abilities to manage, connect with and understand how the COVID-19 pandemic, economic and racial injustice issues are affecting Millennials and Gen Z workers in the workplace. This session covered four ways you can help your colleagues and teams navigate these issues and is designed to help managers increase effectiveness with their teams. 


Candace presented a TEDx Memphis Talk: Are You Talking to Me? What Women Really Want…At Work, on March 17, 2020.


James Hemsath, DM Class of 2017, moderated a panel at the 10th International Engaged Management Scholarship Conference (EMS 2020) on Trust in a Disruptive Era on September 10, 2020.


Anthony Scardillo, DM Class of 2017, Assistant Professor Marketing, Mount Saint Mary College

Newburgh, New York, with Kyle Grppone, MSMC ‘10, presented the iROC : investigating Research On Campus, “Ready for the Real World? The College Student Study”, on October 1, 2020.


Justin Ames, PhD Class of 2018, published “The impact of moral attentiveness on manager’s turnover intent,” with Dustin Bluhm, James Gaskin and Kalle Lyytinen, in Emerald Insight August, 2020. 

Cory Campbell, PhD Class of 2018, hosted continuing education workshops for the Indiana CPA society on various emerging technologies and has about 1,000 participants annually.  Topics include Building a Digital Mindset, Robotics Process Automation, AI, and Cybersecurity. The continuing education  workshops for the INCPA society were conducted during quarters 2, 3 and 4.

Cory hosted a keynote presentation on March 30, 2020at an INCPA Cybersecurity Conference titled "In the Covid Era, What Keeps CPA's Up at Night?"

Cory was also a panelist for the Indiana Sustainability Conference in September, 2020.

Robert Warren, DM Class of 2019, and WSOM faculty member, Timothy Fogarty, published a letter to the editor of Tax Notes Federal www.taxnotes.com on August 24, 2020. The title of the piece was “The Tax Liability of the Recently Disgraced as Early Warning Signal,” and the essence of the letter is that police departments should double check to make sure that their officers are filing tax returns.

Shola Ajiboye, PhD Class of 2019, presented “Extreme Disruption: Examining the Dynamic Capabilities of Nonprofit Organizations for Resilience” at the 49th Annual ARNOVA Conference in November, 2020.

Carl Greppin, PhD Class of 2020, presented a paper called “What Motivates Participation in Corruption and How Does Such Participation Affect Firm Performance?” at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in August, 2020.  His co-authors on the paper were Kalle Lyytinen, Nnaoke Ufere, PhD Class of 2013, and Yunmei Wang, PhD Class of 2014.


Susan Johnson, PhD Class of 2020, presented a paper called “Spanning the Identity Boundary on Cross-Functional Teams,” at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in August, 2020.  Her co-authors on the paper were Richard Boland, Yunmei Wang, PhD Class of 2014, and David Aron.


Angel Lopez, DM Class of 2020, was recently featured in his local newspaper Diario De Navarra on the balance between professional, career and personal life.


Michael Goulder, DM Class of 2021, attending the 2020 Consortium for Operational Excellence in Retail, jointly chaired by Marshall Fisher, of The Wharton School and Ananth Raman of the Harvard Business School. The COER is a true practitioner-scholar body with a roughly equal mix of academics and industry executives. This year's conference went virtual for the first time. Of more importance was the fact that it dealt nearly exclusively with the impact of the pandemic on retail operations. A number of studies in various stages of completion were reviewed, illuminating both the challenges and the opportunities posed by COVID-19.

Mike also presented a paper called “Direct to Consumer Firms: Investing in Differentiated Supply Chain Capabilities,” at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in August, 2020  His co-authors on the paper were Phil Cola, Michael Fisher, PhD Class of 2013, Kalle Lyytinen and Manoj Maholtra.

John Rensink, DM Class of 2021 presented, “Leadership in 20/20: Leveraging Innovative Methodologies to Broaden and Sharpen Our Sight,” at the Presenter Symposium at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in August, 2020.

John also presented a paper at the AoM conference called “Leading Between the Lines: How Leaders Use Political Behavior during Organizational Change.”
