News from Beth Fitz Gibbon, DM ‘09, and Joann Farrell Quinn, PhD ‘13, Alumni Council Co-chairs

Happy Thanksgiving and welcome to our new alumni, the seven DMs and six PhDs, introduced in this issue, who completed their degrees in 2020.  We are proud to have you join us and look forward to your active participation in your alumni association. If you are interested in continuing your research, read about the Engaged Practitioner Scholar (EPS) program.

DM program’s own “Best Seller”:  Voices of Practitioner Scholars in Management

This book embodies the plurality of exciting thinking and unique lived experiences as expressed in the voices of management practitioner scholars who completed the Doctor of Management (DM) programs. The book is online and also available to alumni on request. Please contact Sue with your mailing address.

25TH Anniversary DM Silver Jubilee - A Celebration of You!

Now scheduled for September 2021

Your Alumni Council, faculty, administration and the anniversary planning committee worked hard to make this 2020 event our best reunion ever. So, we were sorely disappointed to have to reschedule. But 2021 will bring even more topicality: Who will have won the election? What will be the newest global challenges affecting industry and concerning scholarship? How will businesses and the economy emerge from the coronavirus recession? What new technologies will change how we work and live the most: Artificial intelligence? Robotics, Automated Vehicles? Extended Reality? What new materials and processes will spur U.S. technological innovation and growth?

Planned panel topics will include:

  • Big data, Analytics, Cybersecurity, Deep Fakes and their impact on practice and scholarship

  • Big Technology’s impacts on the future of industry 4.0: workforce, economy and industry competitiveness

  • Managing and sustaining complex systems in a messy world

  • Leadership and Intentional Change

  • Collective Action for Ethics & Values

  • Research Methods and Writing for Publication And of course, there will be outstanding keynote speakers from industry and academia.

  •  We will keep you informed about the dates and planned agenda.

What’s the difference between DM, DBA and PhD?

The Doctor of Management degree is equivalent to and has become the new DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) degree. Curricula and coursework in both establish a foundation for conducting rigorous research and practicing evidence-based management. Courses are interrelated theoretically and methodologically and prepare students to bring academic, theoretical and data-driven perspectives to bear on problems that they may encounter in their organizations or in public policy advocacy.

DM now DBA is based on the expectation that the practitioner-scholar will develop the ability to think intensely and critically about problems confronting an organization, a community, a nation and the world. Students are afforded opportunities to conceptually model these "wicked" problems, challenge existing assumptions and test new ideas. This is accomplished in a cross-disciplinary fashion with relevant contributions to both management theory and practice.

The PhD in Management: Designing Sustainable Systems is focused on preparing interdisciplinary practitioner-scholars for successful research and academic careers. Students develop the ability to approach problems of practice rigorously from multiple disciplinary angles and to produce sound evidence and theoretical frames to address those problems and communicate them to academic and practitioner audiences.

Tell us what you’re up to

We want to be “proud out loud” about alumni achievements: publications, presentations, promotions, new positions. We’re happy to share your updates in DM Digest.

Help Wanted

Your Cohort Needs a Class Representative

Cohort Representatives are needed to gather updates from other members of their graduating class, willing to reach out to them occasionally for updates, and forward the news they share, we will post their news in the quarterly DM Digest.  If you would like to volunteer to be your cohort’s Representative, please send us a message.

Become an Alumni Council Member

Your Council works to sustain a return-on-investment for your degree by working on behalf of your interests with the program administration.  2021 can be the year all 300+ alumni come together to benefit from, participate in and support alumni activities. To do that, we need your voice. How can we make your investment in your degree more beneficial and valuable? Council members are responsible for staying current with alumni concerns. Participation requires one conference call meeting per quarter, with occasional in-between calls for planning events such as reunions. Council members are nominated and voted for in periodic elections. A new election will be held in 2021. Please, at any time before May 2021, nominate yourself or someone you know.
